Build Her Up; Don't Tear Her Down: Avoiding Standing in Our Own Way

with writer/producer Lux Alptraum and artist/activist Piper Carter

Have you ever felt cut down by your female coworkers or peers?

There’s a trend that goes largely unspoken publicly between women: we tear each other down professionally. While on the surface we may project the need for equality in advancement, in practice, women often pick each other apart as if competing amongst ourselves for the few seats at the top, rather than working together to take more seats at the table.

Sometimes this conflict is the result of understandable divisions within the women’s community, as marginalized women question the motivations and allyship of their more privileged peers. But in other cases, it seems more indicative of the way that women are raised to see one another as competition. And as more women advance and break barriers, this once-hushed story has become impossible to ignore. “The Queen Bee in the Corner Office: Why Women Bully Each Other at Work,” ran as a cover story in this month’s Atlantic Magazine, and writer Lux Alptraum argued in Bustle that we hold female or non-white candidates to an unfair standard when it comes to politics.

And of course, many are still left analyzing why Hillary couldn’t get white women on her side.

Hosted by first-time political candidate Mallory McMorrow, this panel brings together change-makers from the worlds of politics, media, media, arts, and activism to share their insights, experiences, and offer advice on what women can do to get out of our own way and help each other succeed.

This panel is part of the Women's Convention - running Friday, October 27th - Sunday, October 29th at COBO Center in Detroit.
