PRESS RELEASE
After New Reporting, Mallory McMorrow Campaign Calls Out Haley Stevens on Support for ICE
MICHIGAN — After Punchbowl News’ reporting that Congresswoman Haley Stevens has asked outside groups to spend millions in Michigan papering over her record of supporting ICE, Hannah Lindow, McMorrow for Michigan spokesperson, released the following statement:
“ICE agents have terrorized our communities, murdered innocent Americans, and divided families in Michigan and across our country. Yet Haley Stevens voted with Republicans to thank Trump's ICE agents, praised officers at a Michigan detention center where the vast majority of detainees have no criminal record and a man died in custody, and took money from an ICE contractor. And now, she's trying to get dark money groups to tell Michiganders a very different story about her.”
“Michigan voters are smart enough to know you can't praise ICE on the House floor and then get to lie about it on TV. Michigan Democrats deserve a general election nominee who actually stands up to Trump's machine, not one who votes with it.”
Over the weekend, Mallory called out Congresswoman Stevens for her support for ICE at the American Federation of Teachers Forum. Watch the video online here.
BACKGROUND:
89% Of Detainees At North Lake Had No Criminal Record Or Pending Charges. According to Relevant Research’s aggregation of ICE records, North Lake had a criminal population of 151 out of 1390 detainees as of April 2, 2026. According to Relevant Research, “ICE defines criminality as follows: Convicted Criminal: Immigration Violators with a criminal conviction entered into ICE systems of record at the time of ICE custody. Pending Criminal Charges: Immigration Violators with pending criminal charges entered into ICE system of record at the time of ICE custody. Other Immigration Violators: Immigration Violators without any known or a criminal conviction, or pending charges entered into ICE system of record at the time of ICE custody. ICE reduces these three categories into two for their facility reporting: ‘Criminal’ and ‘Non-Criminal’. ICE does not clearly explain its method for disaggregating criminality in ICE Detention Statistics documentation. Comparing percentages across other ICE reporting metrics suggests that ICE includes people with Pending Criminal Charges as part of the ‘Non-Criminal’ category for reporting purposes.” [Relevant Research, 4/2/26]
71% Of People In ICE Detention Nationwide Have No Criminal Convictions, While Many “Convicted Criminals” Had Only Violated Traffic Laws. “42,722 out of 60,311—or 70.8% held in ICE detention have no criminal conviction according to data current as of April 4, 2026. Many of those convicted committed only minor offenses, including traffic violations.” [Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, 4/4/26]

[H. Res. 488, engrossed 6/9/25; Vote #158, 6/9/25]
Stevens Did Not Cosponsor A Competing Democratic Resolution That Did Not Thank ICE Agents. Stevens did not co-sponsor the Neguse resolution that said the House, “(1) condemns the antisemetic attack that occurred on June 1, 2025, in Boulder, Colorado; (2) expresses solidarity with the survivors and their families; (3) recognizes the resilience of the Boulder community and commends their continued efforts to promote peace, safety, and inclusion; (4) calls for continued vigilance and Federal resources to counter rising antisemitism, investigate hate crimes, and support targeted communities; (5) stands with the Jewish community, for freedom of speech and religion, and against fear; and (6) affirms that hate and violence have no place in the United States, and that all people, regardless of faith or belief, deserve to live free from fear and persecution.” [H. And There Are Women Who Are, Who Walked With Us Today And Explained The Intake Process, How Important It Is To Treat People With Humanity. And That, Obviously, Really Stuck Out To Me.” STEVENS: [11:00] "Something that jumped out at me is one of the women we spoke to who came to this facility by way of California. By way of another detention facility, did say that she felt better treated here than in Campbell County, which is in Kentucky, she claimed. And was expressing that she felt as though she had fair treatment. Of note there are female leadership here. There is female leadership. And there are women who are, who walked with us today and explained the intake process, how important it is to treat people with humanity. And that, obviously, really stuck out to me." I know that they said that treating inmates with respect is something that they discussed with you. We've heard from a lot of people with loved ones here that that's not the case.
