McMorrow Statement on Proposed ICE Facility in Romulus, Michigan

MICHIGAN — Today, Michigan Senate Majority Whip and candidate for U.S. Senate Mallory McMorrow released the following statement after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed they had purchased a detention facility in Romulus, Michigan:

“ICE hasn’t made our communities safer. They've spread fear, undermined local law enforcement, and killed two Americans. We cannot let the same happen here in Michigan.

“The decision to open new ICE facilities in Michigan is especially troubling after President Trump singled out Detroit as a place he’d like to ‘nationalize’ elections, and after a top advisor openly suggested ICE should ‘surround’ polling places in November.

“In the State Legislature, we’re taking action to stop Donald Trump’s ICE from terrorizing our communities and making us less safe. But it will take more. The U.S. Senate must stand with Americans everywhere–against any additional funding for this agency, and with a clear message to Donald Trump:

“We need to get ICE out of our communities, completely overhaul this broken agency, and focus on real public safety – not security theater.”

McMorrow is helping push forward legislation to prevent DHS officers from carrying out enforcement in schools, healthcare facilities, courthouses, and places of worship without a judicial warrant, to prohibit the use of masks, and sharing personal identifying information with ICE without a judicial warrant.

McMorrow has called on Congress to “use its power of the purse to end this nightmare and restore the community safety that Americans are demanding.”
