PRESS RELEASE

NEW VIDEO: McMorrow on Mother’s Day: “Let’s Listen to Moms”

“We say that it takes a village, but in America, we don't build one… Let’s go build that village.”

MICHIGAN — This Mother’s Day, Michigan Senate Majority Whip and U.S. Senate candidate and mom to a five-year-old, Mallory McMorrow released a new video highlighting the experience of being a mom in the U.S., and her plan to deliver for them in the U.S. Senate. McMorrow, who would be one of the only parents of a young child in the U.S. Senate if elected, called out the persistent lack of support for moms and families in our country, noting “family policies are always the first things on the chopping block, and I'm running to make sure that stops.”

“Every year on Mother's Day, we buy cards and flowers, and we call our moms, and that's good – do that. But this year, let's listen to moms,” said McMorrow. “We say that it takes a village, but in America, we don't build one. In Michigan, we decided to do something about it… We showed that when you actually prioritize families, things get better. Now I want to take that work to the United States Senate.”

“Let's expand Rx Kids nationwide, a cash grant for new moms and babies that has already reduced evictions and improved birth weights right here in Michigan. Let's finally guarantee paid leave. Let's make sure no kid goes hungry, and every child has access to a great education. Let's end gun violence. Take on big tech and AI. Let's keep our kids healthy, safe, and empower the moms who are doing it all… Happy Mother's Day, moms, let's go build that village.”

Every year on Mother's Day, we buy cards and flowers, and we call our moms, and that's good – do that. But this year, let's listen to moms.

Marjorie Jenkins

She said, Mom, you did so much. She calls me mother, actually. She said, Mother, you did so much for me when I was growing up, and I want to pay you back. Let's go out for lunch, or let's eat dinner, or something like that.

Linda Sirianni

Honestly, it's a simple thing. I love either talking to my kids or being with my kids, because they make me think of things in ways that I wouldn't otherwise.

Cortnie Squirewell

And, hopefully, they'll stay here so I don't have to travel far to visit them and my grandchildren, when that happens.

Calmeta Strachan

So it is a joy being a mother, and a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.

Nicole Denson

Anytime I feel like the world is too heavy, she will literally have the most amazing jokes.

Brandi Mitchell

This is not the time to sit down. So I need the people in Washington to understand that what they do now determines the trajectory for the next decade.

Suzanne Kosiba

We are not just our own bubble, and our actions affect others, and we need each other.

I became a mom in January of 2021. My daughter, Noa, is five now, hilarious, curious, keeps me on my toes every single day. Becoming her mom is the best thing that ever happened to me. It was also the hardest. We say that it takes a village, but in America, we don't build one. We are the only industrialized nation that doesn't guarantee paid leave. Our maternal mortality rate eclipses peer nations, and for Black women, it's three to four times higher than for white women. The school day ends at two, the work day ends at five. And somewhere in that gap, we've decided that it's a mom's problem to solve.

In Michigan, we decided to do something about it. We codified abortion rights into our state constitution. We expanded access to doulas and midwives. We passed the largest tax credit for working families in state history. We created universal pre-K, saving families up to $15,000 a year. We made sure no kid sits in a classroom hungry. We showed that when you actually prioritize families, things get better.

Now I want to take that work to the United States Senate. I would be one of the only moms of a young child serving there. And look what happens when those voices aren't in the room. Paid leave gets killed. Funding for Planned Parenthood, SNAP, and Head Start gets gutted. Family policies are always the first things on the chopping block, and I'm running to make sure that stops.

Let's expand Rx Kids nationwide, a cash grant for new moms and babies that has already reduced evictions and improved birth weights right here in Michigan. Let's finally guarantee paid leave. Let's make sure no kid goes hungry, and every child has access to a great education. Let's end gun violence. Take on big tech and AI. Let's keep our kids healthy, safe, and empower the moms who are doing it all.

I would do anything for Noa. Every parent feels that way about their kid. I want her to grow up with more rights than I had, not fewer.

[Video clip] Hi, happy Election Day!

A community where she's safe, and one day, maybe, a house that she can actually afford to buy, so I can become a grandma, and she'll remember to call. That's what I'm running for.

Happy Mother's Day, moms, let's go build that village.
