BACKGROUND ON THE GORDIE HOWE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE

The Detroit-Windsor crossing handles over 25% of U.S.-Canada trade – and today the only above-water crossing – the century-old Ambassador Bridge – is owned by one billionaire family.

For over a decade, Michigan and Canada have been working together on a new jointly-owned bridge that will make it faster and cheaper for Michiganders to travel to and from Canada, support Michigan’s economy and vital manufacturing supply chains, and cut costs for new cars for all Americans.

But the billionaire Moroun family has consistently maneuvered to block the building and opening of this competing bridge. They funded a failed ballot initiative to try to stop bridges from being built. They have bankrolled politicians like Mike Rogers, who consistently did the bidding of the Morouns and their business, and Donald Trump, who has blocked the bridge’s opening after getting a $1 million donation and a meeting from Matthew Moroun.

Now, with the bridge ready to open and Michigan’s economy standing to benefit –– the Trump Administration is blocking it from opening, trying to shake down Canadian politicians and the state of Michigan to charge higher prices for Michiganders and Michigan companies who rely on the bridge each and every day, in order to pad the pockets of the Morouns.
