PRESS RELEASE

McMorrow Responds to Trump’s Threats to Block Opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge

MICHIGAN –– In response to President Trump’s threats to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Michigan and Canada, and reports that Trump Administration officials met with billionaire Republican donor and Ambassador Bridge owner Matthew Moroun shortly before issuing the threat –– U.S. Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow issued the following statement:

"The Detroit-Windsor crossing handles over 25% of U.S.-Canada trade—and today that crossing is controlled by one billionaire family running a century-old bridge. That billionaire calls Trump’s Commerce Secretary, and hours later Trump attacks the new publicly-owned Gordie Howe bridge and threatens to block it from opening? It's corruption so flagrant it would be laughable if it weren't so damaging.

Trump is selling out Michigan jobs for the same elites he claims to fight, and Mike Rogers is cheering him on—calling it 'the right thing' to block a bridge built by thousands of union workers and owned by the people of Michigan. If you didn't know who Rogers works for before, you do now. He works for Trump, not Michigan. And he has no business in the Senate."

Construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge was fully funded by the Canadian Government, and will be publicly-owned and operated by both Canada and Michigan.

Any effort to delay the opening of the bridge puts Michigan jobs at risk and postpones the economic benefits of what is one of the busiest trade crossings in North America. This project is the product of close collaboration between Michigan and Canada, supporting good-paying jobs and strengthening economic growth on both sides of the border in the hands of the public.
