PRESS RELEASE

McMorrow Responds to Donald Trump’s Unconstitutional Call to “Nationalize” Elections

MICHIGAN –– Today, in response to news that President Trump doubled down on a federal takeover of elections, baselessly suggesting election fraud in Detroit, Michigan Senate Majority Whip Mallory McMorrow issued the following statement:

“Nothing Donald Trump says will change our commitment to protecting the vote, to the integrity and security of our elections, and to reminding people how they can make their voice heard.

Michigan, the home of the largest majority-Black city in the country, Detroit, has been a target of Trump’s election lies for years.

We should expect him to continue to make baseless claims like this one this year –– and know that it will never change the fact that Michigan has consistently administered safe, secure elections, electing both Democrats and Republicans based on the will of the voters. It won’t change the fact that the Constitution clearly delegates administration of elections to the states, not the federal government. It won’t change the fact that election officials of both parties across our state work tirelessly year after year and cycle after cycle to carry out our elections smoothly and securely.

And it won’t change the fact that this is an obvious, insidious attempt to sow distrust in our elections and undermine our democracy in such a way that you – the voter – decide to sit this one out.

When Trump is losing, he lies. But his lies won’t work because we won’t let them. We have done a lot of work here in Michigan to protect the vote: creating nine days of early voting, no-reason absentee voting, guaranteed postage for anyone who wants to vote by mail, and securing drop boxes for every 15,000 residents.

Michiganders’ work on elections speaks for itself. In 2018, Michigan ranked 31st in the nation for election administration by the Elections Performance Index. By 2024, Michigan jumped to second in the nation.

Michigan knows how to run safe, secure elections to ensure every vote counts.

And we will keep running free and fair elections here in Detroit – and throughout our state – ourselves.”
